Things to Do
So Much to Discover
Whether you're travelling with children, as a couple, or as a group — the Sarthe and Loire Valley offer an extraordinary variety of things to see and do. From world-class wildlife parks to cycling through vineyards, you'll never be short of ideas. Here are some of our favourites.
One of France's finest zoos — home to over 1,500 animals including elephants, giraffes, big cats and rare species. A full day out for families. Consistently rated one of the best zoos in Europe.
The famous Loire cycle route passes near the mill. Flat, dedicated paths through vineyards and along the river. Bike hire is available locally — perfect for families and leisure cyclists alike.
The Loir river running through our grounds is excellent for fishing. Pike, perch and other coarse fish are plentiful. Ask us about local fishing permits and the best spots on our stretch of the river.
Several outdoor swimming lakes and leisure centres are within easy reach. The étangs (lakes) of the Sarthe are wonderful for a summer swim, kayaking and paddleboarding in season.
Our 10 acres of grounds include riverside paths, meadow walks and orchard trails. The surrounding countryside has excellent marked walking routes through forest, farmland and river valleys.
The Loire Valley is France's third-largest wine region. Vouvray, Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir domaines are all nearby and welcome visitors for tastings and cellar tours — often free of charge.
The Cité Plantagenêt — Le Mans' medieval walled city — is one of the best-preserved in France. Wandering the cobbled streets, Roman walls and half-timbered houses is a highlight of any visit.
In July and August the surrounding fields burst with sunflowers, lavender and golden wheat. A drive through the Sarthe countryside at this time of year is simply spectacular — we'll suggest the best routes.
The region comes alive in summer with music festivals, village fêtes, son et lumière shows at the châteaux, outdoor cinema and local food fairs. Ask us for the current events calendar on arrival.
