The Loire Châteaux

The world's greatest concentration of Renaissance châteaux — on your doorstep

The Loire Valley

A Kingdom of Châteaux

Moulin St Blaise is perfectly placed for exploring the legendary Loire Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to over 300 châteaux. Tours, the gateway to the châteaux country, is just 40 minutes from the mill. Whether you're a history lover, an architecture enthusiast, or simply after spectacular days out, you could spend a fortnight here and barely scratch the surface.

Below are our favourites — each one within comfortable day-trip distance.

Loire Château
~55 min · 75 km
Château de Chambord

The crown jewel of the Loire — François I's vast Renaissance hunting lodge is the largest château in the Loire Valley. Its famous double-helix staircase (attributed to Leonardo da Vinci) and 440 rooms make it unmissable. The surrounding 5,440-hectare estate is a protected nature reserve.

💡 Tip: arrive early — crowds build by mid-morning. The rooftop terraces are spectacular.
Château de Chantilly
~50 min · 65 km
Château de Chenonceau

The most visited château in France after Versailles — and with good reason. Spanning the river Cher on a series of elegant arches, Chenonceau is known as the "Ladies' Château" for its succession of remarkable female owners. The gardens are as beautiful as the building itself.

💡 Tip: visit on a weekday and explore the kitchen gardens — they're outstanding.
Loire Valley countryside
~45 min · 58 km
Château d'Amboise

Perched dramatically above the Loire river, Amboise was the royal residence of Charles VIII and François I. Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years here — his tomb is in the château chapel. The town of Amboise below is one of the most charming in the Loire Valley.

💡 Tip: visit the nearby Clos Lucé manor house where Leonardo da Vinci lived and worked.

Tours & the City

The capital of the Loire Valley is a vibrant, youthful city with a magnificent cathedral, wonderful food market (Place des Halles), excellent restaurants and a charming medieval quarter. The Perfect base for a day of culture, shopping and cuisine.

💡 Tip: the Saturday morning market is one of the best in France — arrive hungry.

🗺 Planning Your Visits

Most châteaux require 2–3 hours each. We recommend visiting no more than two in a day to avoid château fatigue. Combined tickets are available for several sites. We can provide maps, recommendations and booking links on arrival.

🍷 Wine Country

The Loire Valley is France's third-largest wine region. Vouvray (white), Chinon (red) and Saumur are all nearby. Several domaines offer tastings and tours — ask us for our personal recommendations when you arrive.

🚲 By Bike

The La Loire à Vélo cycle route passes near the mill — a dedicated, mostly flat cycle path linking the châteaux. Bike hire is available locally. We can advise on the best sections for families and experienced cyclists.
